Synlett 2018, 29, 2638–2642

1,10-Phenanthrolines are commonly used as metal-chelating agents and there is strong interest in developing novel phenanthroline-based compounds incorporating thiophene units – which are widespread molecular components in organic electronics and bioimaging materials based on π-conjugated polymer structures. An advancement in this area has been recently reported by the group of Professor Matthias Bauer from Paderborn University (Germany) who described a novel entry to functionalized 5,7-disubstituted thieno[3,4-f][1,10]phenanthrolines.

Professor Bauer said: “Our work allows a facile synthesis of new fused phenanthroline-thiophenes from which we expect a considerable impact on the synthesis of new metal complex photosensitizers and in the field of organic electronics.”
