Anthraquinones represent privileged chemical structures endowed with a very important and wide range of biological activities, from antibiotic to anticancer. They also find frequent applications in materials sciences. Recently, Dr. G. Satyanarayana from the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad, Kandi (India) reported a new and direct approach to functionalized anthraquinones.

Professor Satyanarayana said: “We have developed a dual acylation protocol to access anthraquinones in a one-pot relay process. This simple protocol saves time and is more efficient than step-wise methods, reducing waste and improving yields. Pd-catalyzed intermolecular direct acylation followed by intramolecular Friedel–Crafts acylation were employed as the key steps. It is noteworthy that the toxic carbon monoxide (CO) gas was devoid and easily accessible aldehydes were employed for acylation.”
