Ulmoside A and (2R,3R)-taxifolin-6-C-β-d-glucopyranoside are glycosyl flavonoids isolated from the bark of Ulmus wallichiana plant, which is used in traditional medicine to treat bone fractures. Biological tests on these compounds have indeed shown an interesting and wide range of biological activities. Now, the group of Dr. Venkateswara Rao Batchu from the CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (Hyderabad, India) reported the efficient first total synthesis of these compounds.

Dr. Batchu said: “A simple and scalable first synthesis of ulmoside A and (2R,3R)-taxifolin-6-C-β-d-glucopyranoside, useful for the prevention of metabolic disorders, has been developed and this strategy is also useful to build a library of compounds with different sugars and polyphenols for better therapeutic activity.”
