Maresin 2 is a dihydroxy polyunsaturated fatty acid metabolite derived from docosahexaenoic acid, originally isolated from human macrophages in 2014. This compound showed a potent anti-inflammatory effect and is currently undergoing clinical trials. Maresin 2n-3 DPA, which has a single bond at the C4/C5 position, also showed promising anti-inflammatory properties. Recently, the group of Professor Narihito Ogawa from Meiji University (Kanagawa, Japan) reported a versatile total synthesis of the two maresins, which could be amenable to medicinal chemistry applications.

Professor Ogawa said: “We achieved the stereoselective synthesis of Maresin 2 and Maresin 2n-3 DPA. In the future, synthetic derivatives of these polyunsaturated fatty acid derivatives will be used for drug discovery research. Also, we will continue to synthesize various lipid mediators.”
