Aromatic azoxy derivatives are important building blocks in organic synthesis, used for the preparation of dyes and organic materials. The synthesis of amino-functionalized azoxy aromatics, however, is quite challenging, especially in terms of reaction yields and selectivity. The group of Professor Hongji Li from the Huaibei Normal University (P. R. of China) has recently described a novel strategy for achieving the ortho-sulfonamidation of azoxy-aromatic compounds.

Professor Li said: “A Rh(III)-catalyzed direct amidation of azoxybenzenes with sulfonamides has been well established under mild conditions, offering an attractive approach to asymmetric azoxybenzenes in moderate to good yields and excellent selectivity.”
