The Pd-catalyzed Suzuki coupling of aryl halides with arylboronic acids is one of the most important methods for the formation of carbon–carbon bonds and one of the most used reactions by the pharmaceutical industry. Homogeneous Pd catalysts can be highly reactive and selective, but their recovery and re-use is often challenging; furthermore, loss of activity is a frequent drawback. Immobilization of these catalysts on insoluble solid supports is a very attractive strategy for overcoming these issues. Recently, the group led by Professors Myung-Jong Jin and Sang Eun Shim at Inha University (Incheon, South Korea) described a novel efficient and recyclable supported catalyst for Suzuki coupling.

Professors Jin and Shim said: “A practical heterogeneous catalyst, triazine-tethered N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)–palladium complex on the surface of graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets, has been developed for performing Suzuki cross-coupling reactions in a simple and efficient strategy, which may open up an eco-friendly way to produce important substrates at room temperature.”
