Congratulations to the SYNTHESIS / SYNLETT Best Paper Award Winners 2016!

Kilian Muñiz for SYNTHESIS and Kenichiro Itami for SYNLETT, together with their co-authors, are the recipients of the 2016 Best Paper Awards.

It is our great pleasure to announce that Kilian Muñiz and Thorsten H. Wöste from the Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies and The Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (Spain) are the recipients of the SYNTHESIS Best Paper Award 2016 for their Feature article on Enantioselective Vicinal Diacetoxylation of Alkenes under Chiral Iodine(III) Catalysis.

Paul Knochel, Editor-in-Chief of SYNTHESIS, commented “The development of new catalytic asymmetric synthesis of chiral molecules is especially important for pharmaceutical and fine chemistry in general. Kilian Muniz and Thorsten H. Wöste have reported a very mild method for converting styrene and a range of related functionalized styrene derivatives into the corresponding vicinal diacetoxy derivatives with excellent enantioselectivities (up to 96% ee). The reactions proceed via a hypervalent iodine(III) catalytic species generated in situ. This enantioselective method is not only important by itself, but the results reported in this SYNTHESIS Best Paper 2016 will be very instructive for the future development of similar hypervalent iodine catalyzed difunctionalizations of alkenes. This work will be of interest both for synthetic applications as well as for the comprehension of iodine(I/III)-catalyzed enantioselective addition.”

interview with Kilian Muñiz.

We are also delighted to announce that the Letter entitled Helically Twisted Tetracene: Synthesis, Crystal Structure, and Photophysical Properties of Hexabenzo[a,c,fg,j,l,op]tetracene by Kenichiro Itami and co-workers at Nagoya University (Japan) has been selected for the SYNLETT Best Paper Award 2016.

Benjamin List, Editor-in-Chief of SYNLETT, praised the paper as “truly exemplary for what SYNLETT expects from our very best papers. The authors elegantly apply their powerful annulative π-extension (APEX) to the first synthesis of the parent hexabenzo[a,c,fg,j,l,op]tetracene, which they find to display a chiral, helically twisted conformation in the solid state. Their work represents top quality in chemical synthesis and we are very happy the authors decided to publish this paper in SYNLETT”. When informed of the award, Professor Itami mentioned that the molecule has already received significant attention, including from an industrial angle where it is being used in electronic device applications.
