Deoxy sugars are important compounds with a range of different applications in medicinal chemistry and pharmaceutical research. Furthermore, mono- and oligosaccharides are key constituents of important natural compounds such as glycopeptides, glycoproteins, proteoglycans and glycolipids. It is therefore not surprising that the development of synthetic methods for stereoselectively accessing a variety of these glycol compounds is an active area of research in synthetic and biological chemistry. Professor Jie Yu and co-workers from Anhui Agricultural University (Hefei, P. R. of China) have reported a new approach to iodo-substituted glycals.

Professor Yu said: “A practical phase-transfer catalyst, the anionic chiral Co(III)-complex-templated Brønsted acid, has been developed for the diastereoselective iodoglycosylation and iodocarboxylation of glycals with N-iodo-succinimide under mild conditions.”
