Philippe Barbier (1848–1922) and Victor Grignard (1871–1935): Pioneers of Organomagnesium Chemistry

This Name Reaction Biography presents Philippe Barbier and Victor Grignard as the pioneers of organomagnesium chemistry.

There are few synthetic organic chemists who have not used the Grignard synthesis of alcohols, named for Victor Grignard of the Université de Lyon, at some point in their careers. Building on earlier work in organozinc chemistry by Russian chemists, especially Zaitsev and his students, Barbier and Grignard developed organomagnesium nucleophiles that were much easier to use in synthesis. This article concentrates on the achievements of both chemists and gives background information on their biographies.
