The Matteson homologation reaction is a very useful and stereocontrolled process allowing the iterative insertion of a stereogenic one-carbon unit across the C–B bond of a chiral boronic ester (for a tutorial on the Matteson reaction see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNkt1vo8bj8). Dicyclohexylethane-1,2-diol (DICHED) is one of the most effective ‘chiral directors’ used in the boronic ester function. The group of Dr. Christoph Hirschhäuser from the University of Duisburg-Essen (Germany) has recently reported a user-friendly method for preparing DICHED.

Dr. Hirschhäuser said: “Despite its advantages, DICHED is currently underutilized as a chiral director in Matteson homologations, which could be due to the inconvenience of its traditional (pressurized) synthesis.”
