Mark Lautens becomes new SYNTHESIS Editor-in-Chief
Mark Lautens will take over as Editor-in-Chief from Paul Knochel on January 1, 2022. It is our great pleasure to announce that Professor Mark Lautens (University of Toronto, Canada) will take over the position of SYNTHESIS Editor-in-Chief from Professor Paul Knochel (Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich, Germany).
Thieme has been publishing the international journal SYNTHESIS since 1969. Paul Knochel joined the SYNTHESIS Editorial Board in 1998 and has held the role of Editor-in-Chief since 2014. Together with the Editorial Board, he has continued to evolve SYNTHESIS to a worldwide leading journal for synthetic organic chemistry. Professor Mark Lautens, since 1999 a regional SYNTHESIS editor for the Americas, plans to build on this success.
Mark Lautens was born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. He obtained his B.Sc. degree from the University of Guelph followed by doctoral studies at the University of Wisconsin–Madison under the direction of Professor Barry M. Trost where he discovered Mo-catalyzed allylic alkylation and the Pd-catalyzed enyne cycloisomerization. In 1985, he moved to Harvard University where he conducted his NSERC post-doctoral fellowship with Professor David A. Evans on studies directed towards the synthesis of bryostatin. He joined the University of Toronto in 1987 as an NSERC University Research Fellow and Assistant Professor. Since 1998 he has held an Endowed Chair, the AstraZeneca Professor of Organic Synthesis, and from 2003–2013 he was named an NSERC/Merck Frosst Industrial Research Chair in New Medicinal Agents via Catalytic Reactions. In 2012, he was appointed as University Professor, the highest rank at the University of Toronto. Most recently he was awarded Officer of the Order of Canada, the highest civilian honor in Canada. His current research interests are in multicatalyst reactions, isomerization reactions, and applications of catalysis in the synthesis of bioactive compounds.
In his Editorial in the first 2022 issue of SYNTHESIS he writes: “[…], I am honored to be the first Editor-in-Chief from outside Europe, and I believe that speaks to our collective interest in remaining a visible international journal for the evolving field of synthesis. We welcome submissions from around the globe, and our goal is to work with an incredible team at the publishing house to quickly adjudicate your manuscripts and have them copy-ready and in the journal in a timely manner.“
