Total Synthesis of Brevianamide A

Andrew Lawrence presents the first chemical synthesis of brevianamide A.

According to Professor Andrew L. Lawrence from the University of Edinburgh (UK) “all previous attempts to synthesize brevianamide A have only provided access to brevianamide B, a minor co-isolated diastereomer. Brevianamide A, initially isolated by Birch and Wright in 1969, is the prototypical member of the remarkable bicyclo[2.2.2]diazaoctane family of alkaloids. Now, the Lawrence group introduces their recent major achievement: the first chemical synthesis of brevianamide A, using a biomimetic strategy. Such an approach facilitates the design of short, efficient syntheses that provide opportunities to test the chemical feasibility of proposed biosynthetic pathways.
