The development of new synthetic methods to access differently substituted and functionalized cyclic amines is of great importance, because a large number of natural products and pharmaceuticals incorporate cyclic amines as key structural frameworks. Many of them contain single or multiple substituents on the ring at the α­position as well as at positions further away from the nitrogen atom. On the other hand, C–H bond functionalization of aza­heterocyclic substrates can be considered as one of the most direct and convenient strategies to access the title compounds.
This timely research topic has been recently covered by a Graphical Review in SynOpen, authored by the group of Dr. Weijie Chen (Tongji University, P. R. of China).
