Hydroxylamines are important compounds as they can be used as intermediates for a number of organic transformations; furthermore, the hydroxylamine function is widespread in biologically active molecules and natural compounds. However, the synthesis of hydroxylamines still represents a challenge for organic chemists. Recently, the group of Dr. Daniele Leonori from the University of Manchester (UK) reported a new and practical method for achieving the synthesis of the title compounds.

Dr. Leonori said: “Hydroxylamines are synthetically relevant building blocks in organic chemistry, here we show how to prepare them from readily available carboxylic acids via a decarboxylative photoredox protocol to obtain structurally complex and poly-functionalized substrates.”
