Arylgermanes are fascinating yet marginally studied compounds and potentially attractive synthetic intermediates. However, only a limited number of synthetic methods using arylgermanes have been reported so far, possibly because of the lack of general methods to prepare these compounds. Recently, the group of Professor Shigeki Matsunaga (Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan) reported a new strategy for accessing the title compounds.

Professor Matsunaga said: “Our method provides easy access to various functionalized arylgermanium compounds, and we hope the present protocol will open new applications of organogermanium compounds.
