Countless methods are available for oxidizing alcohols to the corresponding carbonyl compounds – aldehydes and ketones – however, this basic organic chemistry transformation continues to attract the interest of researchers because of the persisting need to identify more environmentally compatible and economically viable methods to accomplish this reaction, combined with the need to achieve the largest possible generality and substrate scope. Recently, the group of Professor Nicholas E. Leadbeater from the University of Connecticut (Storrs, USA) identified a novel and broadly applicable procedure for performing this key oxidation.
Professor Leadbeater said: “We are very pleased with our latest method for the oxidation of alcohols. It uses catalytic quantities of a nitroxide and nitric acid and additional reagents or metal catalysts are not required. The methodology works well for a range of substrates, and we trust it will prove a useful addition to the synthetic chemist’s toolkit.”
