Organo-phosphinates and -phosphonates are useful compounds whose difficult synthesis – especially of the former – has limited their more widespread use in a number of areas, such as therapeutics, flame retardants and fine chemicals. Recently, the group of Professor Koen Binnemans from the KU Leuven (Belgium) has reported a convenient novel approach for these compounds from readily available starting materials.

  • One-pot synthesis of organo-phosphinates and -phosphonates

Professor Binnemans said: “A convenient and versatile methodology has been developed for the synthesis of a broad range of phosphinate or phosphonate derivatives with long alkyl chains. The new one-pot synthesis approaches are more general than the traditional ones and give access to unsymmetrically substituted compounds. These compounds are useful as reagents for solvent extraction of a variety of metals, including rare earths.”
