Diaryliodonium salts are iodine(III) compounds which have found extensive use in organic chemistry for performing a number of reactions, such as electrophilic arylations, selective oxidations, fluorinations (including radiofluorinations), skeletal rearrangement or carbon systems and more. The group of Professor Thomas Wirth (University of Cardiff, UK), a specialist in the field, has recently reported the preparation of novel chiral diaryliodonium salts which promise to be very useful reagents in asymmetric synthesis.

Professor Wirth said: “Chiral binaphthyl-based diaryliodonium salts for metal-free stereoselective arylations have been synthesized. The chiral moiety could also be more widely employed in other stereoselective, hypervalent iodine-mediated transformations.”
