Incorporation of fluorine into organic molecules can be achieved almost exclusively by synthetic means, as only a handful of organofluorine compounds have been identified from natural sources. However, the selective formation of C–F bonds under mild conditions remains a challenging endeavor, especially in complex and functionalized structures. A new promising electrochemical method for forming C–F bonds from C(sp³)–H bonds has been recently reported by the group of Professor Phil S. Baran from The Scripps Research Institute (La Jolla, USA).

Professor Baran said: “The radical-based electrochemical C–H fluorination presented herein is a unique and complementary method for rapid and scalable access to valuable organofluorine products at the early or late stage of a synthesis.”
